Memorial for Phar Lap

Born: 4 October 1926 – Died: 5 April 1932
Breed: Thoroughbred
Country: New Zealand-born, Australian-trained

The name Phar Lap derives from the common Zhuang and Thai word for lightning: ฟ้าแลบ [fáː lɛ̂p], literally 'sky flash'.

Phar Lap was called "The Wonder Horse," "The Red Terror," and "Big Red" (the latter nickname was also given to two of the greatest United States racehorses, Man o' War and Secretariat). He was affectionately known as "Bobby" to his strapper Tommy Woodcock. He was also sometimes referred to as "Australia's Wonder Horse

Phar Lap’s story began humbly. Born in Timaru, New Zealand, the chestnut colt didn’t appear destined for greatness. He was awkward-looking, gangly, and at first glance unimpressive. In fact, when he was bought for just 160 guineas, many thought he would never amount to much.

But what Phar Lap lacked in appearance, he more than made up for in heart. Under the guidance of his dedicated trainer Harry Telford and his beloved strapper Tommy Woodcock, Phar Lap transformed. His early days were marked by doubt and ridicule, yet with patience, discipline, and care, he grew into a powerhouse.

His first few races were unremarkable, and whispers spread that he was a waste of money. But then came the breakthrough — victories that silenced critics and ignited the spirit of a nation. Phar Lap’s stride lengthened, his confidence soared, and soon he was no longer the awkward outsider but the champion the world would never forget.

By the time he won the 1930 Melbourne Cup, Phar Lap had become much more than a racehorse. He was the pride of Australia, a shining light in the dark years of the Great Depression, bringing hope to people who desperately needed it. His courage on the track reflected the courage of those struggling off it.

Phar Lap’s legend was not simply about the races he won — though he won plenty, including 37 of 51 starts. It was about his resilience, his rise against the odds, and the deep bond he shared with the people who loved and believed in him.

Though his life was tragically cut short, his story lives on. From a colt no one wanted, to a national treasure whose name still brings a smile, Phar Lap will forever be remembered as the horse with the biggest heart — in every sense of the word.

In March 22, 2019, Phar Lap - Horse Racing Challenge had its initial release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the Nintendo Switch version released later on January 30, 2020. The game, developed by Pik Pok and published by Tru Blu Games, features cinematic graphics, online racing, and a horse breeding system

Phar Lap - Forever a champion. Forever a legend.
